Dietrich Fischer

Dr Dietrich Fischer was country representative of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in Sudan from 2009 until earlier this year. Prior to that, he was head of the Regional Office of the German Red Cross in East Africa/Nairobi from 2007 to 2009. From 2005 to 2008, he was vice-chairman of the Pan-African Coordination Team (PACT/IFRC). Dr Fischer also worked for the German Red Cross, as head of the Africa section, and as deputy head of the international section, after working on development aid in Russia and the Ukraine for four years.

Dr Fischer holds an MA in African Sciences/Economy and a PhD in Economics from the University of Leipzig. He was senior lecturer at the Africa Institute of the University of Leipzig from 1975 to 1991. His key areas of expertise are the management of relief and development projects in Africa, including planning and evaluation, with experience in volatile and crisis-prone environments such as Somalia, eastern Congo, southern Sudan, Darfur and northern Uganda, and in the acquisition of relief and development funds from international donors.
